***"My regiment had done a twelve mile march along bare muddy roads in fact most monotonous country. So you can imagine how nice it was to find a parcel waiting for me on arrival at our destination. When on the move rations are very meagre which of course cannot be avoided under the circumstances but we are all very happy & in good mettle. I am sure you can realise that when a chap is crawling about in liquid mud well above the knees & cannons are screaming overhead you involuntary murmur 'Oh! that I had the wings of a dove that I might fly away... . I shall be in the very thick of the inferno by the time you receive this." - Edwin Clarke..
