1: PARENTS, BABIES 1/6 Daguerreotype BY PLUMBE
1/6 plate daguerreotype in a stippled octagonal mat stamped "Plumbe" in lower left. The wistful mother holds a baby in her lap. Her fingers extend from the half glove that covers her wrist. The baby, with eyes closed, mouth open—sleeping? or is this a post mortem? The man holds a baby very much alive. Her head has moved and she holds father's hand. As often with Plumbe the image is carefully composed within the frame of the octagonal mat. The geometry of the mat is enforced by the vertical border passing through the center of the mother's hair and body that separates the plain dark background (typical of Plumbe) behind the father from the light area at the right of the scene. The plate is in a nice typical Plumbe "vase of flowers" case with violet silk pad on the separated cover. It has been resealed. There are some minor abrasions just above the left vertical of the mat.
