A hauntingly artistic ½ plate daguerreotype that has more of the quality of a painting than of a studio portrait. The woman's face with her glasses under her eyes has an intriguing sad expression. The focus is on her clearly-lit face. The lower part of her body is less sharp, adding to the painterly quality, yet her hands are still expressive (with a gilded ring on one finger.) I believe this is by one of the great master daguerreotypists. The plate is still sealed, in a worn black pushbutton case.
