"PAWNEE INDIAN CHIEF, FULL DRESS" BY JOHN CARBUTT, CHICAGO.
The square-cornered gold-mount view has the title, with the number "506", in pen, in Carbutt's hand, on the white verso. This is "Man Chief "(Peta Lasharu), Head Chief of the Skidi Pawnees. This view, as No. 306 from Carbutt's "Views of the Rocky Mountains and Vicinity" is illustration in William Brey's "John Carbutt on the Frontiers of Photography," p. 62.
The Chief is posed at the entrance to an earth lodge. He wears a peace medal and interesting leggings and headdress. The view is clean, though the printing in this edition is a little less rich than what is found on some other Carbutt mounts.
