11" x 9 3/8" gelatin silver print by Philippe Halsman, ca. 1970's print of this 1950's portrait, with the uncommon "Philippe Halsman" stamp on verso. This was not part of a portfolio, and is not seen in every auction as are many other less subtle Marilyn portraits by Halsman. Her erotic side is fully present in her flimsy intimate attire, but her artistic and intellectual aspirations are also represented. She is lost in the music. The bookshelves clearly show the range of her reading, including Dostoevski, Oscar Wilde, Steinbeck, 2 by Mailer, an Anthology of American Negro Literature, etc. On the table there is a photograph of the great Italian actress Eleonora Duse, and a theatrical statue.
