Author: Wallace Stegner Publisher: Heinemann (London) Printing Year: 1971 Inscribed first edition Condition/Details: Bound in purple cloth with bright gilt embossing, this volume is a scarce signed copy of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about "a wheelchair-bound historian, Lyman Ward, who has lost connection with his son and living family and decides to write about his frontier-era grandparents. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1972. The novel is directly based on the letters of Mary Hallock Foote, later published as "A Victorian Gentlewoman in the Far West". Stegner's use of substantial passages of Foote's actual letters as correspondence from his fictional character Susan Burling Ward caused a continuing controversy." (Quotation courtesy of Wikipedia). Author's inscription on title page reads: "For Sylvia Asendorf, cordially Wallace Stegner." A photograph has been laid in with the following description of the scene and people present on the reverse: "Wallace Stegner at home signing his bibliography November 18, 1990. Publisher Jim Hepworth and bibliographer Nancy Colberg". The volume shows very light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages.
