This edition contains the introduction by Edmund Wilson. The power of this book by Hemingway, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954, and its contribution to the development of the author's distinct style, is assessed in the following manner by a student of his work: "To read Hemingway has always produced strong reactions. When his parents received the first copies of their son's book In Our Time (1924), they read it with horror. Furious, his father sent the volumes back to the publisher, as he could not tolerate such filth in the house. Hemingway's apparently coarse, crude, vulgar and unsentimental style and manners appeared equally shocking to many people outside his family. On the other hand, this style was precisely the reason why a great many other people liked his work. A myth, exaggerating those features, was to be born." (Essay by Anders Hallengren, consulting editor for literature at Nobelprize.org). The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages. The book measures approximately 5.5" x 7.5" and contains 212 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
