Peterkin SCARLET SISTER MARY 1928 Signed 1st ed.
Author: Julia Peterkin
Publisher: Bobbs-Merrill Company
Printing Year: 1928 Signed first edition
Condition/Details: Bound in black cloth with bright gilt embossing to front cover, this antique volume is a scarce autographed copy of this novel, a feminist comedy, that was awarded the 1929 Pulitzer Prize for the Novel. The author was one of very few white authors to deal extensively with the African-American experience, focusing her attention on the population of the Sea Islands and coastal areas of South Carolina. Her unprejudiced depiction of the daily lives and folklore of the working people of the area occurs over a series of novels written in the twenties and thirties. Not surprisingly, "Scarlet Sister Mary" met with hostile reaction in the South, and was banned in many public libraries there. The controversy and positive reception elsewhere made the book a bestseller though. In 1998, Converse College, her alma mater, established an annual award in her name. Her signature appears on one of the preliminary pages of this the "Airplane edition". The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 4.5" x 6.75" and contains 345 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
