There are forty-nine pages with poems and etchings by the author. Each German poem is accompanied by Michael Hamburger's translation on the facing page (except in the case of the introductory poem that appears opposite the signed second title page). Grass, who studied at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art and the State Academy of Fine Arts in West Berlin, continues to be active as painter, sculptor and printmaker, and, as this book clearly shows, often seeks to combine literary and artistic productions.
