Title: The Elected Member
Author: Bernice Rubers Publisher: Eyre & Spottiswoode Printing Year: 1969 Signed first edition Condition/Details: Bound in maroon cloth with bright gilt embossing to spine, this volume is a scarce signed copy of the Welsh author's fourth novel, for which she was awarded the second Booker Prize for Fiction in 1970. The dustjacket blurb opens with the following paragraph: "It often occurs in the familes of the insane that a certain member of the family is unconsciously chosen by the others as a scapegoat: such a person may be called the elected member. This idea is the underlying theme of Bernice Rubens' new novel - a sharply observed yet moving story of a barrister, Norman Zweck, whose addiction to a hallucinatory drug is destroying his mind." The author's signature is written on a paper slip pasted to title page. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages. Dustjacket is in glassine cover. The book measures approximately 5.5" x 8.25" and contains 224 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50 ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
