Title: Puzzled America
Author: Sherwood Anderson
Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons
Printing Year: 1935 Inscribed first printing

Condition/Details: Bound in dark blue cloth with gilt embossing, this antique volume is a scarce collection of essays in which the author surveys the state of the nation during the Great Depression. Anderson writes in the introduction: " I am in the position of most writers nowdays. Formerly, for a good many years, I was a writer of tales. It may be that I should have remained just that, but there is a difficulty. There are, everywhere in America, these people are now out of work. There are women and children hungry and others without clothes. Middle-aged men and women, who but a few years ago felt themselves secure, are now suddenly facing old age, thrown out of security. They have been thrown out of their houses, off their farms. You see and talk with such people. The amazing thing is that there is so very little bitterness. People want to tell their stories, are glad to tell. I blame myself that I do not get more of these stories, do not often enough get the real feeling of the people to whom I talk." Inscription on front endpaper reads: " To Doctor Leo Stieglitz/With Sincere Regards,/Sherwood Anderson." Leopold Stieglitz' Ex Libris has been laid in. The volume shows light external age/wear, with sunning to spine, and is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 5.75" x 8.25" and contains 287 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
