Condition/Details: Bound in green cloth with bright gilt embossing, this antique volume is a scarce biography of one major French author by another. This is copy number 158 of 300 copies for sale in England. Gide's career spanned sixty years, during which he authored works from a range of literary genres, and functioned as a major figure in the social and literary life of France (he helped found the Nouvelle Revue Francaise in 1909); he was the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947 "for his comprehensive and artistically significant writings, in which human problems and conditions have been presented with a fearless love of truth and keen psychological insight". Montaigne was, together with Goethe, Nietzshe and Dostoevsky, a key literary influence. The volume shows very light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages.
