This is copy number 158 of 300 copies for sale in England. Gide's career spanned sixty years, during which he authored works from a range of literary genres, and functioned as a major figure in the social and literary life of France (he helped found the Nouvelle Revue Francaise in 1909); he was the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947 "for his comprehensive and artistically significant writings, in which human problems and conditions have been presented with a fearless love of truth and keen psychological insight". Montaigne was, together with Goethe, Nietzshe and Dostoevsky, a key literary influence. The volume shows very light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages.
