Title: The Siege of Krishanpur
Author: J. G. Farrell Publisher: Weidenfeld and Nicholson Printing Year: 1973 First edition Condition/Details: Bound in green cloth with bright gilt embossing to spine, this volume is a scarce true first edition of the British novelist's prize-winning novel. This second volume of his "Empire Trilogy" (the other two volumes are "Troubles" and "The Singapore Grip") won the Booker Prize in the year of its publication. The book details the siege of an Indian town during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 from a single perspective: that of the occupying British rulers. The main characters find themselves subject to the increasing strictures and deprivation of the siege, which reverses the "normal" structure of colonial life where white Europeans ruled Asian subjects. This reversal accounts for much of the success of the book, which is not just an early-1970s exercise in empire-bashing, nor an orthodox account of the decay of civilisation under pressure. The absurdity of the class system in a town no one can leave becomes a source of comic invention, though the text is serious in intent and tone (summary courtesy of Wikipedia). The volume is in fine condition, and is solidly bound with clean pages. Dustjacket is in glassine cover. The book measures approximately 5.75" x 8.75" and contains 344 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50 ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
