Author: Thomas Mann
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf
Printing Year: 1938 Signed printing
Condition/Details: Bound in black cloth with dustjacket in glassine cover, this volume is a scarce autographed official text copy of a lecture series, which was delivered by the exiled German Nobel Laureate during a 15 city tour across the United States during the spring of 1938. The author sought to rally audiences in this country to the struggle against Nazi Germany, giving an account of the reasons why a democratic order should, and would, prevail over fascism. It should be noted that this text is not translated into English by Helen Lowe Porter, but by Agnes E. Meyer, wife of Eugene Meyer, the financier and publisher of The Washington Post. She accompanied Mann during his visits to New York and Washington D.C., and served, together with his daughter Erika, as interpreter at conferences held in these cities. She subsequently became one of the German author's strongest supporters and advocates in the United States. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 5.5" x 8" and contains 67 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
