Condition/Details: Bound in pale green cloth stamped in red and green, this antique volume is a rare first edition of Baum's signature work. All 24 color plates by W. W. Denslow that illustrate this edition are present. Points indicating a second state: Spine wording appears in serif font, "the" present in title on spine (which is published in red); there is no box around ads appearing across from title page; first line on page 14 begins "low wail of the wind..."; plate facing page 34 has no dots above moon; the word "pieces" on page 81 has been corrected; plate facing page 92 has no red shading on the horizon; pages 100 and 186 bear imperfect type on the last line; first line of page 227 begins "While the woodman..."; there is a thirteen-line colophon. This scarce, landmark volume has a complete textblock and the color plates show beautifully. The book displays external age/wear, with some loss to the cloth on the front cover five inches across and half an inch to an inch and a half down, along the top edge. A few leaves are detached with outer edgewear and the title page and pages 1 to 20 have staining to upper right-hand corner. The pages are otherwise clean with bright color plates and in-text illustrations. The hinges have separated, the mull is intact and remains attached up the center of the textblock. This is an untouched, unrestored copy of this classic that will respond well to some basic restorative treatments. The book measures approximately 6.75" x 8.75" and contains 259 pages.
