Title: Lucretia, the Quakeress
Author: Phebe Hanaford
Publisher: J. Buffum (Boston)
Printing Year: 1853 First edition

Condition/Details: Bound in faded original cloth boards, this antique volume is a rare, landmark Quaker/Universalist text by the first woman ordained Universalist minister in New England and an important leader in the women's rights movement. This book was a significant anti-slavery writing of the time, and is particularly interesting for its focus on the role of women in the abolitionist movement. The author's cousin was Lucretia Mott, famed reformer in the fields of abolition, feminism, peace, temperance, and liberal religion. Phebe Hanaford was an accomplished literary figure, having received her education under the Reverand Ethan Allen ("The Green Mountain Boys"). She went on to be the editor of the Universalist paper "The Ladies Repository", and published 17 books, her most famous being "Daughters of America" (a biographical dictionary of 957 women). She also contributed to Elizabeth Cady Stanton's controversial "Woman's Bible", published in 1895. Hers was the first Lincoln biography published after the assassination. As indicated, the volume shows external age/wear, and is slightly cocked. The book is solidly bound with boards and pages showing occasional water staining. The book measures approximately 4.25" x 6.25" and contains 172 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
