Get Right With God Roadside Religious Sign. 72" w x 71" h including base. Corrugated metal with letters cut from asphalt roofing shingles. Provenance: The private collection of Roger Manley. Est. $2,000-4,000. Buyer arranges for shipping. This sign is the same shape (although larger) than most of his mold-cast concrete signs, but much rarer. Mayes quickly discovered that this style of sign was more prone to wind damage, and soon gave up the "experiment." This one, which probably dates from the 1950s, is in excellent shape even though it was displayed on the outside of the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore for almost a year, after decades of display along a highway in eastern NC. Unlike Mayes's concrete signs, it is lightweight enough to be displayed hung on a wall, although impressively large (the "heart" is six feet wide and more than four feet high, with individual letters about 12 inches high!). It would make an incredible graphic accent piece in any collection, or a unique feature in a big loft or modern space. It is mounted on a welded metal stand fabricated at AVAM, so it can be displayed as a free-standing object as well, but it is easily removable for wall display. It has a great age patina, and all the letters are intact.
Condition reportExcellent shape, especially for an environmental piece.
