Graphite and chalk on cardboard. The original cardboard piece had tape at the top and bottom and Bill Traylor created this image right on top of the cardboard and tape. Strong image. Archival frame. Highly collectible. Image is 7" w x 18" h. Frame is 11" x 22". Provenance: Chuck and Jan Rosenak, purchased from Luise Ross Gallery in 1983. Est. $20,000-25,000 Ship: $100 (strong box). Traylor, born into Slavery in Alabama in 1854, began producing drawings in 1939 at the age of 83. He sold his drawings for pennies on the street corner. His work was discovered by Charles Shannon who arranged for several shows of Traylor's work. There was very little interest in Traylor's work until the landmark exhibition, Black Folk Art in America, at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. Now, Traylor is considered to be one of the most important Self-taught artists of the 20th century
