Sister Gertrude Morgan with Her First Little of Children When She was Crowned out in 1957."c. 1968. Mixed media on paper, heavily inscribed and signed within inscription. 9" x 8.5". Frame is 21.5" w x 17.5"h. 1957 is the year when Sister says she married Jesus. Provenance: Exhibited at the American Folk Art Museum and the New Orleans Museum of Art, from the personal collection of Barbara Louviere. Estimate: $20,000-25,000. Ship: $100 (strong box). Sister Gertrude Morgan was a preacher, missionary, artist, musician and poet from New Orleans. At the age of 38, she heard the voice of God telling her to preach his word. She left her husband and family and organized an orphanage. In 1956-57 the voice told her she was Christ's Bride. From that point on she wore the white habit and opened The Everlasting Gospel Mission. She used her paintings as teaching aids.
