Carved and painted wood. 45" long x 27" h (attached masts will increase height by 10"). Signed and dated 1987. This piece was commissioned by the consignor and is believed to be the last ark by Jauquet. It is one of only a few produced by this artist and is in pristine condition. Ark comes with pairs of animals all in excellent condition. Rare and highly collectible. Lot includes boat, noah, his wife, and two each of giraffes, zebras, horses, gazelles, elephants, gorillas, rhinos, penguins, skunks, turtles, flamingos, egrets, eagles, pandas, parrots, pelicans, orangutans, blue herons, kiwis, blue jays, yellow birds, bison, wildebeasts, blue birds, red birds, and a life boat with rigging...This is the only Noah's Ark every made by Jauquet that has a life boat with skunks in it. The skunks had to be in a separate boat as the they may become offensive to the other animals. Lot includes letter by Jauquet dated, Nov. 13th, 1986 to the consignor and original owner. Jauquet talk about selecting the "log for the hull," He also writes about this project, and one other, being all he will be able work on for the entire year. The consignor had apparantly described her trip to Africa to Jauquet and he writes that he will also include a pair of gorillas in the ark. Fantastic documentation accompanying a wonderful and intricate piece of folk art. This is only the second Jauquet Ark Slotin Auction has had the priveledge to sell over the years.
