Apulia, c. 380BC., a lovely red figure "pelike". Funerary scene with a standing figure on either side. Perhaps relating to athletics as well. One of the figures is a standing Maenad who holds a sista in left hand and with right holds portion of her long draped and flowing gown. Cippus to her right directly under the sista. On back side stands an amorous naked male youth who holds a walking stick in his right hand and holds a portion of a long draped garment swung over his left shoulder with his left hand. This shaped vase, a pelike is quite rare for Apulian pottery, especially in such nice condition. French collection, composed in the 1960's and early 70's. H: 10", D: 6".
