Rare African-American miniature chest, poplar throughout with cut nail construction, lift top with tang hinges over single drawer, early pale blue paint, drawer side inscribed in pencil "Eliza Hamlin Witten Sep. 23 1848 Negrotown", probably New England, late 18th/early 19th century, 14-1/2 x 15 x 8-1/4 in. Break and loss at one tang hinge (hinges replaced), paint early but probably not original, drawer pulls early replacements, some later nails to backboards, normal wear, surface abrasions and scattered paint losses throughout.
