Ohio inlaid Federal chest, inlaid walnut with poplar secondary, top with inlaid quarter fans, four graduated dovetailed drawers with line inlay and teardrop escutcheons and flanked by chamfered and vine and leaf inlaid corners, original brasses, barberpole and star-inlaid skirt, original French feet, attributed to Washington County, Ohio, 1815-1825, 42-1/2 x 41 x 20-1/4 in. Overall good condition, old refinishing, probably original brasses, original feet and blocking with patches and repairs to facings including right front foot with replaced front facing, undisturbed backboards, veneer losses to skirt, minor separations at case sides. In its construction and design, this chest is closely related to an inlaid slant-front desk dated 1819 in the collection of the Dayton Art Institute. See Jane Sikes Hagaman, [Ohio Furniture Makers], Vol. 1, page 76, and Andrew Richmond, "Inlaid Furniture of Ohio" in [American Furniture], edited by Luke Beckerdite, 2004 edition, page 222. The fine vine and leaf inlay with barberpole inlay on skirt and side and other construction details suggests they were made in the same shop.
