Rice plantation brass chondrometer, device for measuring grain, brass beam marked "Payne.London lbs per bushel", case with label inscribed "The value of this instrument…every person may ascertain the quality of all kinds of grain…", 18th or 19th century, 6 x 9 in. assembled, in fitted mahogany case with partial original label, 9-1/4 in. Case with repairs and separations, losses to paper label. Provenance: Applied label with period inscription "Bought at Est. Sale at Dean Hall 2nd Jany 1857 price $4.00 K.S.B". Dean Hall was established circa 1720 on the Cooper River, South Carolina.
