Very fine Calhoun family Federal bed, elaborately carved overall with urn, swag and spiral posts wrapped in grapevines and leaves with Corinthian columns and cluster column tops, peach carved tops and pineapple carved base supports, headboard with woven basket of fruit relief carving, original poplar cross rails, possibly South Carolina, 19th century, 89 x 79-1/2 x 57-1/2 in., inside 52-1/2 x 73 in. Long rails replaced with patched mortise housings and plugged bolt covers, lacking four beads on headboard cartouche surround, lacking finials and original canopy frame, scattered wear and abrasions to carving overall, lacking one caster, other patches and repairs to posts at joint with rails. Provenance: Family history holds the bedstead was from the Calhoun mansion in Charleston, South Carolina; by descent in the family of George Williams, builder of the mansion circa 1876; Private Collection, Charleston, South Carolina This elaborate bedstead may have been inspired by the carving tradition of Samuel McIntyre of Salem, Massachusetts.
