Five damaged or partial instruments: 19th century brass compass frame, 13-1/2 in.; Gurley double vernier transit, [lacking telescope]; Berger transit, 10-1/4 in., [vertical wheel broken]; brass telescope for transit, unmarked, 10 in.; partial wooden compass case, back marked "EG 1805" and "UP" and "UPR" (Union Pacific Railroad), scratched on back "Hayden", possibly used by Ferdinand V. Hayden, who worked on survey for UPR, 1867-1878, [wear and losses]. Provenance: The Collection of the Late Ronald Kiser, Mars Hill, North Carolina
