Brian Elmer unexpectedly saw himself become an important part of New York Yankees history when on the night of September 21st, 2008 he caught the first home run to be hit on the last night of baseball to be played at Yankees stadium. A strange twist of fate for a Mets fan.
"This is my first time here," said Elmer, a salesman from Trenton, New Jersey. The historic home run ball came off the bat of Yankee all-star Johnny Damon and soared directly into Elmer's bare hands where he quickly pocketed the indelible piece of baseball history. The ball shows the mark from where it cracked of Damon's bat. The three-run shot in the third inning sent a wave of excitement through the sold-out crowd, many anticipating it the be the last home run to be hit in a ballpark that saw so many history-making home runs from the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, Di Maggio, Mantle and Maris. Yankee catcher Jose Molina's home run later in the 7-3 win over the Orioles proved to be the last, but it was Johnny Damon's shot that opened the last chapter in the overwhelming history of baseball's most storied stadium.
