RODCHENKO, Aleksandr Mikhailovich (1891-1956). Portrait of Mayakovsky. (428 x 345 mm). The photograph was originally taken in 1924 and this print dates from the 1930s. RODCHENKO'S ICONIC IMAGE OF THE GREAT FUTURIST POET, POLEMICIST AND ARTIST. In his 1931-1932 article "On Composition," Rodchenko wrote, "In photography composition plays a tremendously important part, possibly it is the single most fundamental consideration. Since it is a young art and has something closely in common with painting, it has naturally drawn very considerably on painting in the sphere of composition, the good as well as-more often-the bad." By 1930 Mayakovsky would be dead and Rodchenko the object of official scorn and contempt that resulted in professional oblivion. Here in a single image, is captured the promise and eventual betrayal of the revolutionary consciousness that Mayakovsky so passionately believed in and eventually died for.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
