Shklovskii and L. Yakubinskii. Shklovskii was one of the most important Russian literary critics of the early twentieth century. He founded OPOYAZ (Obschestvo izucheniya Poeticheskogo Yazyka), the Society for the Study of Poetic Language. They along with the Moscow Linguistic Circle developed the critical theories and techniques of Russian Formalism (a term originally used pejoritively by their opponents). One of his essays deals with the Russian Futurist nonsense language zaum. Brik was an influential Russian avant-garde writer and literary critic, who like Shklovskii belonged to the Russian Formalist school. He cofounded with Vladimir Mayakovsky the magazine LEF (later Novyi LEF [New LEF]). His wife Lili was one of Mayakovsky's mistresses and the subject of many of his most ardent love lyrics.
