Frank Lanning was a Providence Journal Sports Cartoonist and Illustrator for 45 years. However, he was far more than just a sports cartoonist. Frank, whose work enhanced the Journal until his retirement in 1982, also was a master of text: a paragraph or two he'd attach to a drawing would show an equally skilled writing style. His brief remarks with the famed "sailing into the sunset" cartoon on President Kennedy's death tugged at the heart as did the illustration itself. Just as brilliantly done were his "Brightening His Corner" tributes to others, once a regular feature combining cartoon and copy.
Later in life, He was a sought-after emcee and speaker, especially at national sports. He had a tart yet kindly wit expressed in an amusing twang that captivated every audience. Frank remains a legend throughout the sports world. He died in 1987 and his work is recognized as among the best in all of sports. The painting is approximently 4 ft square, in a very beautiful frame, and is in perfect condition. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
