Charles Johnson Payne 'Snaffles' (1884-1967) 'Gunners' chromolithograph, 19cm x 43cm Charles Johnson Payne began his career as a war artist for The Graphic and The Sporting and Dramatic News. At the end of World War I he concentrated in sporting subjects particularly hunting and racing scenes. His lively drawings often included an element of humour and quickly established 'Snaffles' as one of best sporting artists of his generation. Much of his work was reproduced in print form.
