Walter Elmer Schofield, American School (1867-1944) 'The Cornish Coastline', oil on panel, signed and inscribed 'To Dr Corbould' on reverse, 20.5cm x 26cm Walter Elmer Schofield was born in Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. In 1892 he moved to Paris to continue his studies at the Academie Julian where he was influenced by the plein air style of the Impressionists. In 1903 he moved to St.Ives in Cornwall with his English wife, Murielle Redmayne and young family. Schofield returned to America every year and although an expatriate, became regarded as one of Pennsylvania's most important artists. He exhibited his views of Cornwall and Delaware River on both sides of the Atlantic.
