Frederick Goodall, RA (1822-1904) 'The overflow of the Nile', oil on canvas, signed with monogram and dated 1885, 52cm x 92cm Frederick Goodall made his first visit to Egypt in 1858. This proved to be the turning point in his career and provided him with inspiration for the rest of his life. In 46 years he exhibited no fewer than 170 canvases with an Egyptian theme at the Royal Academy. In Cairo he rented a house with fellow artist Carl Haag and the two explored widely even camping for weeks with the Bedouin. Goodall sketched continually and returned to London periodically to work the sketches into finished canvases. His paintings were in huge demand by wealthy patrons and it is recorded that by 1860 he was earning the enormous sum of £10,000 per annum. An exhibition of 50 of Goodalls paintings at the Royal Academy in 1869 was bought in one lot by the dealer Ernest Gambert.
