Title: Archive of photographs, flyers, etc. relating to People's Park in Berkeley, CA
Author: ** Description: Archive of approximately 18 original photographs (most mounted, several with photographer's name on verso of mount), various sizes, most 10x12" or larger; 3 front-page articles from the UC Berkeley Daily Californian mounted to poster board; small broadside proclaiming 'Park Here Any Time'; 2 small flyers for the 'People's Park Bail Ball' at Winterland Arena featuring Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, etc.; 2 issues of the 'Instant News Service'; 2 variations of a broadside titled 'Who Owns the Park?'; a later Pacifica Tape Library brochure of People's Park related recordings; etc.Rising out of the Berkeley Free Speech movement amidst the political and social turmoil of the late 1960s, People's Park and the confrontation between police and protestors over the use of this neglected plot of land became an iconic event of the era. The photographs, taken by participants, bystanders and other observers show the interactions between the police, soldiers and protestors, helicopters spraying tear gas on the crowd, two of the photos show a wounded James Rector being aided on a rooftop (Rector would be the only fatality of the confrontation, sucumbing to his injuries from a shotgun blast). Also included is an enlarged column from a San Francisco Chronicle article regarding an exhibtion of these photographs at the Phoenix Galleries in Berkeley.
