Title: Oil painting of a stage coach in the redwoods
Author: Rockwell, Cleveland Description: Oil on canvas, approximately 36x26", modern backing board, framed. Signed and dated at lower left.Scene of a stage coach travelling along a mountain road in the shade of the redwoods of the Pacific Coast, a mountain peak in the distance with the sunset sky beyond. The coach is shown approaching a man on horseback, perhaps a bandit preparing to hold-up the stage? Cleveland Rockwell (1837-1907). Born in Youngstown, Ohio; studied at the Troy Academy, 1853-53; joined the U.S. Coast Survey in 1856; mapmaker for the Union Army during the Civil War; in 1867 moved to California and continued his work for the Coast Survey; in 1878 moved to Portland, Oregon; in 1892 retired from the Coast Survey; active as an artist in Portland until his death in 1907. His works include topographical drawings, watercolors, and oils of California and the Pacific Northwest coast.
