Title: Oil painting of a stage coach in the redwoods
Author: Rockwell, Cleveland
Description: Oil on canvas, approximately 36x26", modern backing board, framed. Signed and dated at lower left.Scene of a stage coach travelling along a mountain road in the shade of the redwoods of the Pacific Coast, a mountain peak in the distance with the sunset sky beyond. The coach is shown approaching a man on horseback, perhaps a bandit preparing to hold-up the stage? Cleveland Rockwell (1837-1907). Born in Youngstown, Ohio; studied at the Troy Academy, 1853-53; joined the U.S. Coast Survey in 1856; mapmaker for the Union Army during the Civil War; in 1867 moved to California and continued his work for the Coast Survey; in 1878 moved to Portland, Oregon; in 1892 retired from the Coast Survey; active as an artist in Portland until his death in 1907. His works include topographical drawings, watercolors, and oils of California and the Pacific Northwest coast.

Condition report

Canvas rippled, some crackling to surface (heaviest at bottom); very good.
