First Edition.Important first-hand account of the campaign against the Borneo pirates conducted by the British in 1843-44, with information on the legendary "White Rajah of Sarawak," James Brooke. Hill writes that Keppel, a British naval officer who had served in the Opium War, "participated in the campaign against the Borneo pirates in 1843-44. During the execution of his orders to protect the trade and suppress piracy in the Malacca Straits, he met James Brook who had received the title of Rajah of Sarawak, in perpetuity, from the Sultan of Brunei. The first volume concerns itself with Brooke's exploits in Sarawak from 1838-1842, prior to his meeting with Keppel. Brooke attempted to open Borneo for foreign trade and tried to pacify the tribes. As a reward for success in the latter endeavor, he was given his title in 1841. Volume Two recounts the military exploits of Brooke, Keppel, and Sir Edward Belcher, who occasionally came to Keppel's aid, gives a geographic overview of Borneo, and includes an account of the Dyaks, the aboriginal Bornean tribes. In later years, Keppel served in the Baltic, was at Sevastopol in 1855, and became an admiral in 1869. Brooke, who left Sarawak in 1863, was succeeded in the title by his nephew, Charles Anthony Johnson Brooke. With the armorial bookplates of R.B.A. Macleod, his ink signatures on the half-titles.
