Author: Mandelslo, Johann Albrecht von Description: 2 volumes in 1. [28], [220]; [184], [72] pp. Text in 2 columns, with the columns numbered. With 21 copper-engraved maps by Pierre van der Aa, 15 of them folding; 23 copper-engraved plates of views, etc., 16 of them folding, including the very large view of Tokyo (Yedo); 15 illustrations and 4 maps in the text; frontispiece portrait. (sm. folio) 12¼x7½, 18th century full calf, spine decoratively tooled in gilt, raise bands, morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers & edges.Exceptional copy of Mandelslo's account of his travels to the courts of Russia and Persia, and his return. An abridged version of Mandelslo's account was first published as portion of Adam Olearius' account of the embassy to the east from the Duchy of Holstein, published in Schleswig in 1645; the text of Mandelslo's narrative was published in 1658. The present edition is notable for the excellent maps and plate produced by Pierre van der Aa, as well as the fine quality of printing. Mandelslo separated from the other members of the embassy at Isfahan and journeyed on to India, thence to Ceylon, Madagascar and around the Cape of Good Hope. His account also contains information on the East Indies, China and Japan, but this was taken from other souces. Heading: zzfPlace Published: Amsterdam Publisher: Michel Charles le Ce'en Date Published: 1727 Condition reportDarkening to a few leaves, but still in fine condition, very clean, the impressions of the plates and maps quite sharp.
