Post-Revolutionary War to Civil War
1798 Philadelphia Postally Cancelled "Samuel Coates" Letter

1798, Autograph Letter Signed, by Samuel Coates, with Integral Postal Cover, and circular Philadelphia cancellation, Very Fine.
This is an original letter dated December 27, 1798, and postmarked the following day, in which Samuel Coates, a Philadelphia merchant, has written to fellow merchant Moses Brown of Newburyport, MA, announcing that Coates had obtained a settlement from the Spanish government on behalf of Brown. This settlement appears to be the result of the Spanish capture in November 1793 of a ship or cargo belonging to Moses Brown. That ship was commanded by Captain Holland, who was imprisoned for a time by the Spanish. Through negotiation, Coates had obtained not only a settlement from the Spanish, but interest for the 5 years it took to recover it. The addressed outer leaf has a circular Philadelphia Postal Cancel, stamped in brown, reading "Phi - 28 - De." This letter was written on one sheet of paper, measuring 10" x 15.5," which was folded in half, producing four pages, of which two are written on, and one is the address sheet. The letter itself is in great shape, aside from some toning and some pieces missing from the margin of the address sheet.
