Civil War Union Envelopes
Scarce Scott & McClellan Civil War Patriotic Cover Used January 16, 1862, Civil War Patriotic Cover, With Portraits of Generals Winfield Scott and George McClellan against an American Flag, Postally Used, Scarce Design, Fine. This wonderful and seldom seen Civil War Patriotic Cover has oval portraits of Scott and McClellan set against an American flag, all printed in reddish brown. This 3.25" x 5.25" cover was mailed from Barnsville, Pennsylvania to Ceres, New York. The Barnsville post office was only opened in 1861, so the stamp has a pen cancel tying it to the cover. This cover is complete, aside from a bit trimmed from the right end when it was opened, and appropriately toned for its age. According to the consignor, this cover design is listed as L-246, and is scarce. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
