Civil War Broadsides
1863 Civil War Union Draft Broadside From Lynn, Mass. July 13, 1863 Civil War, Printed Draft Broadside, Lynn, Massachusetts, Listing the Names of over 500 Men whose Names had been drawn in the Draft Lottery, Choice Very Fine. This is an original Civil War Period Broadside which measures 14" x 9," from Lynn, MA, dated July 13, 1863. The introduction reads: "Report Extra - Drafting to fill the quota of Lynn commenced at Mechanic Hall, Salem under the direction of Capt. Johnson, Provost Marshal of the Fifth District. The attendance of the spectators was not very large, a large portion being Lynn residents who were on the "anxious seats." The machine used for drafting was an octagon shaped tin arrangement about two feet in diameter and eighteen inches long. It was suspended by the center upon a frame work, and turned with a crank." Following this is a long list of over 500 names of those whose names had been drawn from the draft "machine." This Broadside is complete, without tears or markings, and in excellent condition. The headline at the top, "Reporter ... Extra," was lightly printed. This is a historically important document, which not only records hundreds of names of interest to Local History buffs and Genealogists, but also describes the device used to select the draftees.
