Glass and Porcelain
c. 1740 Quality Westerwald "GR" Jug c. 1740 German Westerwald "GR" Jug, Choice Mint. 5.75" tall, the one-handled jug is gray stoneware with blue-glazed designs, including a large-petaled flower. Made in the first half of the 18th Century and common in use in Colonial American homes. Bearing a rather clumsy ceramic medallion "GR" beneath a crown, representing either King George I or II. Similar examples can be found in Neumann's "Collector's Encyclopedia of the American Revolution." It is in outstanding condition--would be a perfect addition to Colonial or glassware collection. George I was the first Hanoverian monarch of England; both he and his son George II relied heavily on the office of Prime Minister (occupied for the most part by Robert Walpole.) This reliance ceded more and more power to the office of the Prime Minister, enabling Britain's cabinet system to fully develop. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
