Encased Postage Stamps
Rarity-8 Three Cent "Bailey & Co." Jewellers Philadelphia

EP-36, HB-45, S-22, 3¢, BAILEY & CO., Jewellers, Philadelphia, About Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 known) according to Fred Reed. This example certainly ranks very high among the finest known. The stamp is a deep red that is not faded and is well centered, slightly to the top with just a bit of tone at the base of Washington's bust. It is seen through clear, unbroken mica, having just slight signs of actual wear. The case shows just light circulation and is sharp in detail, being an attractive medium to deep chestnut color with some faint traces of verdigris on the rim edge. We only record having three prior examples of this EP number. In our EAHA Auction, February 12, 2005, lot 903, which brought $2,961. An important Encased Postage rarity.
