Very Rare "Fred K. Skinner's Archimedian Reel - Sheffield" Marked Brass Trout Reel. Widely accepted as the first patented fly reel, this invention of Fred K. Skinner was granted patent No.1426 on April 25, 1848. Pre-dating the first patented American sidemount (the Billinghurst reel), this little 2" dia. side mount reel, a No.2 size, features a perforated spool and variable tension screw that applied pressure to the spool via a flat spring. With a tiny brass handle grasp and full size foot, attached to the frame via four rivets, in excellent condition, and a rare example of an early British reel.
The allure of classic tackle may strike a chord in the angler at any given moment. For Jerry Zebrowski that moment came in 1987. The fisherman glanced at his reel and remarked on the intricate beauty of the functional device that landed him a massive brook trout. A respected past president and CEO of Rossborough Manufacturing and later a consultant for Magnesium Technologies, the angler would enter semi-retirement not only with a quest for trout, but with an ever growing interest in antique reels. Over time, Zebrowski's passion for reels surpassed his affection of the stream, and his focus steamed toward the historical study of fly fishing, researching and pursuing the most exceptional examples of trout reels ever to be crafted. A connoisseur of the highest stature and sophistication, Zebrowski's collection of reels encompasses many of the rarest examples ever presented for sale. This collection showcases one man's enthusiasm and drive to procure the best of the best. A majority of the most important reels in this collection were purchased at auction in recent years, making this impressive array of fly reels like no other to come before. One feature that sets this collection apart, was Zebrowski's thorough research into the variations of markings, styles, and sizes for each reel maker. As his collection matured, Zebrowski only added reels that differed in some small, but meaningful way. As a result, many "one of" and "only known" examples in this collection are still just that, an important fact when considering the significance of this offering, the finest assemblage of fly reels to come to auction, likely never to be duplicated. With the increasing appreciation of antique fly reels, especially those of exceptional condition, this collection should be of tremendous interest to collectors and investors of both fishing history and fly fishing in general. The overall aesthetics and high quality of the reels produced by the makers of old can never be equaled, making this a truly extraordinary opportunity.
