Condition/Details: Bound in maroon cloth with gilt-stamped front board title and blind rule borders, this antique volume is a scarce account by a former slave of his life in Virginia and his escape to New England, where he became a shoemaker, and ultimately a Methodist preacher. The work is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and two additional plates. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. An piece of paper bearing the following hand-written inscription has been taped to the title page: "That the reading of this little volume may/ bring you rest and pleasure after the strenuous/ work of the school is the wish of the author./ L. G. S./ June, 24, 1914" One of the preliminary pages also bears a dedication bearing the same date. It reads: " To Supb. Thurston/ of the/Public Schools of D. C./from/Miss Louise A. Smith/J. R. Giddings School./Principal/" The book measures approximately 5.5" x 7.75" and contains 150 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
