Title: Sixteen Maps Accompanying Report on Forest Trees of North America
Author: Prof. C. S. Sargent Publisher: Uncredited publisher Printing Year: 1883 Condition/Details: This large folio antique forest atlas is illustrated with color maps prepared under the direction of the famous American botanist Charles Sprague Sargent (1841 - 1927), who was the first director of the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University, and a scholar whose work was so highly valued that the standard botanical author abbreviation Sarg. is applied to plants he described. This portfolio seems to be the companion to the volume of the same name published by the Government Printing Office the following year. The credited engraver is Julius Bien & Co. (NY). Areas covered by the maps include both the United States and Canada, but not Mexico. Titles of initial maps are as follows: Relative Average Density of Existing Forests; Forest, Prairie & Treeless Regions of North America; Natural Divisions of the North American Forests. Remaining maps show distribution of the following trees in North America: Genus Fraxinus (The Ashes); Genera Carya & Umbellularia (The Hickories & California Laurel); Genus Juglans (The Walnuts); Genus Quercus (The Oaks); Genera Castanea & Castanopsis (The Chestnuts & Chinquapins); Genus Pinus (The Pines); Genera Abies & Picea (The Firs & Spruces); Liriodendron Tulipifera and Pinus Lambertiana; Prosopis Juliflora, Quercus Alba and Q. Densiflora; Fraxinus Americana & Pinus Ponderosa; Genera Chamaecyparis & Cupressus; Genera Thuya, Taxodium and Sequoia; Pinus Strobus, P. Palustris and Pseudotsuga Douglash. The portfolio shows some external age/wear, with covers mildy soiled and stained, and bottom portion of cloth spine torn. Map entitled "Forest, Prairie & Treeless Regions of North America" shows significant wear along one edge, without affecting map itself. The colors are vivid and the maps show beautifully. The portfolio measures approximately 19.5" x 28.5". This lot is part of a large collection of books and ephemera that we will be selling over the coming months, from the estate of Lewis E. Shuman, long-time collector from Rochester, New York. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $9.50 ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
