(Philadelphia) Printing Year: 1859 Condition/Details: Bound in blue cloth with bright gilt embossing to spine, this antique volume is a rebound first American edition of the autobiography of this famous French magician, from whom Harry Houdini derived his stage name. Recounts the rich details of a life of travel, showmanship and slight of hand. Edited by Dr. R. Shelton Mackenzie, but actually translated by Lascelles Wraxall. "Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin (1805-71) was the most influential magician of the nineteenth century. Called the father of modern magic, his shows in Paris and London redefined the conjurer's art. Although he never appeared in America, imitators performed here using his name. A young Hungarian immigrant, Erich Weiss, inspired by this autobiography, took the stage name Houdini" - Jay. JAY, MANY MYSTERIES UNRAVELED. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 5" x 7.75" and contains 445 pages.
