Title: The Women of the American Revolution
Author: Elizabeth F. Ellet Publisher: Baker and Scribner Printing Year: 1848 Volume I Condition/Details: Bound in blindstamped brown cloth with gilt embossing to spine, this antique volume is a scarce early edition of a collection of historical biographies of the prominent female figures in the first years of the United States. The author states in her preface: "To render a measure of justice - inadequate it must be - to a few of the American matrons, whose names deserve to live in remembrance - and to exhibit something of the domestic side of the Revolutionary picture - is the object of this work As we recede from the realities of that struggle, it is regarded with increasing interest by those who enjoy its results; while the elements which wer its life-giving principle, too subtle to be retained by the grave historian, are fleeting fast from apprehension. Yet without some conception of them, the Revolution cannot be appreciated. We must enter into the spirit, as well as master the letter." The work is illustrated with a number of plates offering portraits of some of the women being presented. The volume shows external age/wear, with minor chipping and tearing to spine, and fading to both spine and boards. The book is solidly bound with pages that show foxing throughout. Preliminary pages have been excised. This is a former library copy and has a plate on front endpaper and stamp on upper right-hand corner of title page. The book measures approximately 5" x 7.75" and contains 348 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50 ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
