Craft HISTORY OF BRADFORD COUNTY PA 1878 Sketches

Sign In to see what this sold for

Title: History of Bradford County, Pennsylvania with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers, 1770 -1878
Author: David Craft
Publisher: L. H. Everts & Co. (Philadelphia)
Printing Year: 1878

Condition/Details: Bound in half leather with bright gilt embossing, this antique volume is a scarce historical work of local and regional Pennsylvania history. The author explains his purpose as follows: " The plan of the work is somewhat different from that usually followed in similar histories. Instead of making as little of the general history as possible, and throwing the bulk of the material into township annals, he has pursued exactly the opposite course; just as little has been put into the accont of the townships as could be well done; those things only are found there which are stricty local. Great pains have been taken to insure accuarcy. It has been the author's purpose if mistakes were made at all, that they should be in omitting what might be said, not in saying what was not true; but with all the pains taken to secure accuracy, mistakes will doubtless be found." He goes on to state: "One of the things in which special interest has been taken, was to obtain a complete military record of every man who went from Bradford County into the Army of the Union. A couple of years since, circulars were published in the newspapers of the county asking for information, and in many cases letters were written, making personal solicitations of friends to furnish this information from their respective neighborhoods." The work is illustrated with many plates offering portraits of prominent members of the community, together with depictions of farms and landmark sites. Several pages of Bates family genealogy have been laid in (Front endpaper bears the name of Emmett Bates, Mansfield, Penn). The volume shows minor external age/wear. Hinges are cracked, endpapers show some mildew markings, intact textblock has age-toned pages with gilt edges. The book measures approximately 9.5" x 12" and contains 492 pages plus 4 page listing of names of citizens "who assisted and contributed towards the publication of the history of Bradford County, with personal statistics." This lot is part of a large collection of books and ephemera that we will be selling over the coming months, from the estate of Lewis E. Shuman, long-time collector from Rochester, New York. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $9.50
