***The series was conceived by Powell Perry while serving with the Camouflage Development and Training Centre, Royal Engineers, probably in 1942. The choice of subject matter was entirely his, and the illustrators were, apart from Victor Ross, all working as model-makers or artists at the Centre. A full description and a checklist by John Morris in the Penguin Collector's magazine gives the month and year of publication for eighty titles, but does not record "Once upon a Time." or "The Travelling Theatre", both of which are present in this collection. As well as the note regarding her sister's work, there are two autograph letters from Pauline Baynes presenting her own copies of some of the books, referring to the series and her work for it, her first to be published. There are also three volumes by Roland Davies published by Perry Colour Books, but not part of the main series. None of the present titles appear to be in the British Library Catalogue. .
