AUDUBON, John James (1785-1851). The Birds of America. from drawings made in the United States and their Territories...reissued by J.W. Audubon.
New York: Roe Lockwood and Son, 1861. 7 volumes, royal 8vo (255 x 163 mm). 500 tinted lithographic plates after Audubon, finished by hand Publisher's brown panelled morocco, blocked in blind, spine lettered in gilt, g.e. Condition: occasional light rubbing to joints. an attractive set of the third octavo edition of audubon's masterpiece and the first of the lockwood reissues. The octavo edition was first published in parts from 1840-1844, and there followed eight subsequent editions (the last appearing in 1889). The plates of the second and all subsequent editions can be distinguished from the first by the printed backgrounds which indicate the use of tint stones prior to the hand-coloring. Nissen IVB 52; Reese Stamped with a National Character 35.(7)
